Adaptive and Optimal Filtering, Prediction and Control in Adaptive Optics

Steve Gibson

University of California, Los Angeles, CA, US

Abstract:

In adaptive optics (AO), deformable mirrors are used to correct wave front errors in optical systems. The commands to the DM are generated by a control loop that feeds back an estimate of the wave front error, usually obtained from a wave front sensor. Classical AO loops use very simple classical feedback control methods, and therefore lack the capability to compensate for loop latency by predicting optical wave fronts. In recent years, novel AO control loops are using adaptive and optimal filtering methods to predict wave front error, thereby improving wave front correction in adaptive optics applications with strong turbulence, high wind speeds and time varying wave front statistics. This presentation will discuss both adaptive and optimal prediction and control methods developed and applied in experiments at UCLA.

Steve Gibson received the Ph. D. in Engineering Mechanics (1975) from The University of Texas at Austin. He served one year on the faculty of the Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Department at The University of Texas at Austin and one year on the faculty of the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. In 1977, he joined the engineering faculty of UCLA, where he currently is a Professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. Professor Gibson’s research interests include control and identification of dynamical systems, adaptive filtering and signal processing, infinite-dimensional system theory and approximation theory and numerical methods for distributed parameter systems. His research applications include adaptive optics, identification and control of flexible structures, control of fluid flow and active noise control. He has served as an associate editor for the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization and for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control.
